She was forced to take a year off from singing after damaging her vocal cords in 1977. Despite being told she would never sing again, her resilience thought different, seeking the help of vocal coach Katie Agresta to regain her vocal strength. WebBut Lauper's exuberant style and her 1983 hit song belied continued tumult in her life. She says she was sexually assaulted by band members in one of the first groups she joined. And in 1977, after damaging her vocal cords, she was told she would never regain her voice. (Hard work with a voice coach restored it.) WebLauper refused to play the song live after 1987. She finally incorporated it back into her live show during several dates in Australia in 2004. Fans kept requesting the song and Lauper eventually sang the first verse and chorus a cappella.
